Chip Sealing Vs Asphalt Overlays: Which Is Best?

When you research cost-effective paving solutions for your driveway, sidewalks, parking lot, or personal road, the most probable outcome would show asphalt paving and chip seals.

Which is best?

Well, different paving projects require different sets of requirements, and both chip seal and asphalt overlays have both their good side and drawbacks.

Let’s look at the difference between asphalt and chip seals:

Asphalt is a mixture of petroleum byproducts, binders, and a few aggregates such as stones and sand compacted together to form a long-lasting durable pavement structure.

And chip seals involve spraying a thin layer of the same content of hot mix asphalt onto a paved surface while adding a few small aggregates(chips) to the sprayed surface.

After the application, the chips are compacted into the asphalt surface to ensure they adhere properly while the excess is swept away

So, basically, you can think of chip seals as a way of maintaining asphalt pavements since it helps in:

  • Correcting cracks or other defects
  • Protecting the pavement against sun and water damage
  • Preventing black ice
  • And it also makes the pavement skid resistant.

This means if you need to create an entirely new pavement, asphalt paving is the solution to go with.

And if you need to correct a defect in your pavement or simply maintain it, use chip seals, they are way less expensive compared to installing new asphalt overlays, and they also extend the lifespan of your pavement.
